| Edward Poland Taylor, 100, of rural Ashland County, died Tuesday, October 5th, 2010 at Brethren Care Village. Edward, and his twin brother, Robert Henry Taylor, were born November 25th, 1909, (Thanksgiving Day that year) in Olney, Illinois to the late Henry Glenn and Ora Vada (Nee Combs) Taylor. Edward and Robert attended first grade at Cherry Street School in Olney, Illinois. The family moved to St. Louis, MO in 1916. Both attended Bryan Mullanphy Grammer School and graduated the 8th grade in 1923. After two years in high school in St. Louis, the family moved to Evansville, IN. The brothers graduated from Benjamin Bosse High School in 1927. The family moved to Akron, OH. in 1927, then to Kent, OH. in 1928. The twins entered Northwestern University in Evanston, IL in 1928 and graduated in 1932 with BS&C degrees. After a brief employment in Boston, MA, Edward returned to Kent in 1933 to work in the Accounting Department of Twin Coach Company, a manufacturer of urban motor coaches. These vehicles had two engines located in the center under the floor of the bus with each engine driving a rear wheel. Twin Coach was very successful in selling the uniquely designed coach as a replacement for the street cars. In only a few years, Twin Coach progressed from a small, privately owned company to a NYSE listing with sales in most of the United States, as well as Canada, Mexico and Brazil. While at Twin coach, Mr. Taylor became interested in unlimited hydro racing. His association with North American Marine of Wausau, IN provided an outlet for this endeavor. In the meantime, the Taylor family purchased a small farm at Presquile Point in Brighton, Ontario, Canada. Soon they discovered that the farm house was an old log cabin dated about 1851 and was the second home built between Toronto and Kingston. For over 50 years, the family restored the cabin and brought many boats for the summer from North American Marine. In 1955, Edward resigned from Twin Coach Company and took a position as Treasurer of Industrial Rayon Corporation. In 1959, Mr. Taylor went to United-Carr in Boston, MA as a Financial Vice-President. United-Carr had plants in England and Australia. Mr. Taylor consequently supervised the acquisition of additional facilities in England, Germany, Italy, and Japan while traveling extensively throughout the world. United-Carr was aquired by TRW, Inc. and Mr. Taylor returned to Cleveland, OH to join TRW as Treasurer and Vice-President for International Finance. He took early retirement in 1971, but later accepted a position as Chairman of the Executive Committee for Union Commerce Bank. He retired from Union Commerce in 1975. In 1970, Mr. Mrs. Taylor purchased a farm north of Jeromesville, named it Avian Acres Farm, and moved from Bratenahl Place in 1971. From there, Mr. Taylor and his wife, Louaine, traveled extensively to over fifty countries in Europe, South America, Australia, Alaska and Asia for the next ten years. Mr. Taylor was a Lifetime member of the Huguenot Society, an Honorary member of the Pan America Clipper Club, a member of The Union Club of Cleveland, the Rockton Lodge F & AM of Kent, OH, and the St. Helena Episcopal Church. Beaufort, SC. For the past few years, Mr. Taylor has been an avid supporter of the Ashbrook Center at Ashland University. Because of his interest in writing and communication skills, Mr. Taylor established the Edward P. Taylor Award for Excellence in Teaching as well as the Louaine S. Taylor Chair in the English Department. Edward was married to Louaine Marie Fischer Schram in 1936 and for 65 years, until her death in 2001. Edward is survived by three children, a daughter, Louaine Leisching of Flat Rock, NC, a son, Edward Poland Taylor, Jr. and wife Earlene (Brandi) Shields Taylor of Port Clinton, OH and another son, Eric Schram Taylor and wife Judith Ryan Taylor of Fallbrook, CA.
