Naomi "Nay" (Doss) Broerman, 89, of Indianapolis, formerly of Evansville, passed away on Tuesday, May 9, 2006, at her home. Nay was born in Evansville on November 9, 1916, the daughter of John and Martha Doss. She was a graduate of Bosse High School in 1933. She retired in 1982 from the Housing Counseling Agency, Hope of Evansville. Nay was a charter member and served on the executive board of the National Federation of Housing Counselors until her retirement. She also served on the executive board of the Indiana Federation of Housing Counselors. She was the first woman appointed to the Redevelopment Commission by Mayor Russell Lloyd Sr. and served six years, four of which she served as president. She served on the Housing Committee of the Human Relations Commission. She was on the executive board of the Westside Improvement Association. She was active in the Republican Party and served as president of the Republican Fellowship Club eight years. She and her husband, Ray, both received the Sagamore of the Wabash from Governor Orr. She was a volunteer in many community activities. Nay was the Senior Queen of Vanderburgh County in 1988. She had her Real Estate Brokers License and owned Broerman Realty until becoming Director of Hope of Evansville. She was a 50-year member of the Daughters of the Nile and also a 50+- year member of the Eastern Star Chapter 555. She received the Human Rights Award in 1978 from Mayor Russell Lloyd and the Human Relations Commission. She received the Community Service Award from the NAACP in 1983. She and Ray moved to Indianapolis in 1990 in order to spend time with their daughter. Nay is survived by her sons, Robert A. Schmitt and his wife, Jackie, of Newburgh, and Ramon Broerman and his wife, Peggy, of Jackson, Mississippi; grandchildren, Susan Broughton, Steve Schmitt, Stacy Kreager, Shawnna Duncan and Jay Warner, eight step-grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and 10 stepgreat-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, Ray Broerman; daughter, Jean Schmitt Warner; parents, John and Martha Doss; a sister, Juanita Johnson and her husband, George; and a brother and sister-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. Wayne Doss. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 16, at Ziemer Funeral Home East Chapel, 800 South Hebron Avenue. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. on Monday, May 15, at the funeral home.
