Lillian H. (Higginson) Powell, 92, passed away at Deaconess Hospital.

She was born in Henderson, Kentucky, on February 3, 1917, to the late Harley and Emma Higginson. Also preceding her in death were sister, Mary E. Howland, and brother, Harley Higginson Jr.

Lillian was a 1935 graduate of Bosse High School and attended Lockyear Business College. She retired as a substitute kindergarten assistant in the Vanderburgh School Corporation. She also worked at Schears as a bookkeeper. She was a volunteer pink lady at Deaconess Hospital for 37 years.

She was survived by her husband, Leo Powell; daughter, Shirley Harper and husband, Paul; granddaughters, Jodie and her husband, Stan Buckley, and Julie Nicholson; stepgranddaughters and their husbands, Kami and Matt Heroy and Keli and Heath Williams; great-grandchildren, Alexa Nicholson, Logan Nicholson,and Grant Buckley; and step great-grandchildren, Summer Barnwell, Jace Heroy, Levi, Parker and Cooper Williams; and nieces and nephews. Also, her very special friends, Debra and David Williams and Faye Nelson.

A very special thanks to Juanita Townsend, a dear friend, for the many hours she spent visiting with mother.

The family would like to thank the staff at Westpark Rehabilitation Center for their wonderful care.

Services will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, September 22, 2009, at Alexander West Chapel, officiated by Rev. Ernie Stair, with burial in Park Lawn Cemetery. Friends may visit Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Vanderburgh Humane Society, 400 Millner Industrial Drive, Evansville, IN 47710 or Riley Hospital for Children, 30 S. Meridan Street, Suite 200, Indianapolis, IN 46204.

How do I follow the previous entry? My love and thoughts are with all that knew Ms. Lillian!!! To the family and loved ones I share a fraction of your grief!!! I only knew Ms. Lillian for the last year and a half of her life, but I shall carry a part of her with me the rest of mine!!! Every weekend she was part of my family for 24 plus hrs... I will miss her as well as all the staff at Westpark surely will!!! I shall never eat a piece of Hershey's Chocolate without thinking of her!!! Rita Hardy, Evansville, Indiana

Dear Family, My Name is Mandee Butts,Your  mother was My best Friends I ever had I meet here threw my Step Grandma Lena Schenk. I have Sever Seizers. Your mother helped me Get threw one of the hardest times in my life! 12years ago I had to have a mager Brain Surgery at Riley's Childrens's Hospial in Indianapolis. I was 14. That’s when I met Lillie as I called her. she wrote me letter in the hospital and then after. the bond we grew. I will Never forget as long as I live. I Wish I could have meet all before now. threw the love of one one and her faith that I would be ok. The Letter that She Sent Kept me fighting and even though I am still having them I have now out live what the doctor Said I would because I believed everything she told me Me. I am now 26 Thank you all for the 12 year you shared you mom. I Sorry for all your loss but Lillie Was a second Mom I never had to me so I fill the sadness you fill. If you Ever need a Friend I Wil be there for you.
