Donald Thomas Ashby, 83, of San Diego, formerly of Evansville, Ind., died at 10:52 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 17, 2000, at El Cajon Valley Convalescent Center in San Diego. He was born in Evansville, Ind., on Aug. 6, 1917, to the late Cameron L. Ashby and Attie Toombs Ashby. He was a quality control inspector for Rohr Industries for 16 years, worked for Servel in Evansville, and was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving in Europe. He was a 1936 graduate of Bosse High School in Evansville, commander of VFW Post 5985 in Pacifica Beach, Calif., and district commander of VFW for California. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Helen Feldpausch Ashby, in 1971. He is survived by his wife, Betty Ruth Davis Ashby of San Diego; one stepdaughter, Betty Jo Wheelis of San Diego; his caregiver, Beth West of San Diego; several step-grandchildren; several step-great-grandchildren; one niece; two nephews; and several great nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Slaughters Cemetery in Slaughters, Ky., with the Rev. Brad Rogers officiating. There will be no visitation. Harris Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. |
