Sam W. Korb, 92, and a veteran of World War II, the Korean War, and Viet Nam died of a long term illness on Wednesday, Sep 21, 2011 at Golden Living Center in Stanford, Kentucky. Born in Evansville, Indiana on June 4, 1919 to the late George Frederick and Helen Franz Korb, Mr. Korb graduated from Bosse High School [1936-37?] in Evansville. He later attended Perdue University and Rollins College. A recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Purple Heart and three awards of the Air Force Commendation, Mr. Korb was truly an American hero and a member of the Greatest Generation of this country. Following retirement from the regular Air Force in 1967 Mr. Korb taught Air Force ROTC at Danville High School and later at high schools at military bases in Kaiserslautern, Germany; Madrid, Spain, and Orlando Florida. Mr. Korb was an active member of the Lions Club and of First Christian Church in Danville, Illinois. Mr. Korb was preceded in death by his first wife, Jeanne Chaille Korb (mother of his three daughters); and all of his siblings, George F. Korb, Doris Jean Korb Claus, and Carol Sue Korb. He is survived by his wife of forty years, Betty Ann North Korb, who currently resides at Golden Living Center in Stanford. He is survived as well by his three daughters, Margaret Peggy (Jim) Korb Butler of Danville, Illinois, Suzanne E. Korb of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Beverly Ann (Kevin) Korb Verdon of Port St. Lucie, Florida. Mr. Korb has three grandchildren, Warren Korb Butler of Prospect, Kentucky, James Parrish Butler of Crestwood, Kentucky, and Samantha Verdon of Port St. Lucie, Florida. He also has 4 great grandchildren, Zachary Bauer Butler and Molly Korb Butler of Prospect, Kentucky, and Jacob Nolan Butler and Elizabeth Jean Butler of Crestwood, Kentucky; and three step-children, Margaret Ann Cooper Turner of Stanford, Dick Cooper of Stanford, and Bill Cooper of Orlando, Florida. A graveside service will be held on Thu, Sep 29, 2011 at 1pm at Bellevue Cemetery. The family requests that expressions of sympathy be made to Heritage Hospice or St. Peter and Paul Church building fund.
