Charles "Charlie" John Steber, Sr. was born April 13, 1923 in Owensboro, Kentucky, to Florence (Oswald) Steber and George Steber, Sr. Charlie had two brothers and one sister. He graduated from Bosse High School in 1942, then continued his education at Evansville College. He enlisted in the United States Army Air Force during WWII. Following his duty to serve our country, Charlie worked for Republic Aviation. He married Ruth Heyden on October 22, 1944, and following the marriage, began working at Heyden Hardware, which eventually became Heyden-Steber Hardware. After 50 years of service, Charlie retired in 1991, and began his second occupation as a certified Christian counselor volunteer. Charlie served on the Board of Directors for Karges Furniture, was a mediator for the Indiana Bar Association, President of the Jaycee's, and a Board Member on Exchanged Life of Dallas, Texas. Charlie was Young Man of the Year, an Exalted Ruler of the Elks, President of the Polio Foundation, a Board Member of Evansville ARC, and spent 10 years on the Draft Board. He was a past president of Junior Chamber Commerce and a member of many clubs such as Jaycee Old Timers and the Y.M.C.A. for 50 years.

Charlie is survived by his son, Charlie Steber, Jr. and his wife, Phyllis, of Evansville, IN; son-in-law, Kent Wells and his wife, Kay, of New Albany, IN; five grandchildren, John Steber and his wife, Dr. Nicole (Kuhlman) Steber, Kristen Boehnlein and her husband, Kevin, Trina Wells, Trisha Fountain and her husband, Sean, and Erica Rummel and her husband, Kyle; He is also survived by four great-grandchildren.

Charlie is preceded in death by his wife, Ruth E. (Heyden) Steber; son, Frank Steber; daughter, Beth (Steber) Wells; parents, Florence (Oswald) and George Louis Steber, Sr.; brothers, Robert H. and George Louis Steber; and sister, Mary Jane Steber.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, August 26, 2011 at 1:00 PM at Browning Funeral Home, 738 Diamond Ave. Entombment will be held at Oak Hill Mausoleum where the Retired Veteran's Memorial Club will perform military rites.

Friends may visit from 2:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Thursday, August 25, 2011 at Browning Funeral Home.

So sorry to see that Mr Steber has passed away. From 1966 to 1971, I was an accounting Manager for Whirlpool Ordnance & bought lots of "hardware" from Hayden-Steber.
Having recently buried my own second DEAR WIFE & MY only Sister, I do know how to & will PRAY for your family during this DIFFICULT time.
