Gene Schmidt died March 27, 2006 at the age of 79. He was the only senior on Evansville Bosse's state championship team in 1944... migrated south to Texas Christian University, where he captained the Horned Frogs for 3 seasons... because of a military service provision, he became the only 5-yr varsity letterman in one sport in Southwest Conference history... he was MVP for 3 years... the only player to start and score in 100 straight games... named to TCU Letterman's Hall of Fame... he also won 2 track letters there... and played a year with Houston Oilers pro basketball team in '51. He was inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in 1987. |
