John D. "Jack" King


John D. "Jack" King, 77, of Evansville, passed away on Friday, Nov. 4, 2005.

He was born on February 13, 1928, in Princeton, Ind., the son of Rollie and Velma King, who are both deceased.

He graduated from Bosse High School in 1945 and enlisted in the Air Force. He served until 1949. While in the Air Force, he was stationed in Hawaii.

He attended Evansville College to study music before joining the Postal Service. He retired in 1987, after 36 years of service.

Jack began his professional music career at the age of 16 with local bands. While in the Air Force, he played with the Air Force Dance Band. He had several of his own bands, Martin King Orchestra, Jack King Orchestra, Jack King Quartet (or Quintet, whichever size band that was needed for the occasion).

He arranged music for various bands around the city and for bands that came into the city for events. He was the musical director, arranger, and composer of the Temple Airs for many years. He also arranged music for some of the high school dance bands.

In 1989, he received the first Award of Merit of the Scottish Rite Community Center for Performing Arts. Music was his passion in life.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Barbara (Krietemeyer); four children, James and wife Robin, Stanley, Lesley and husband Jeffrey Stahl, and Scott, all of Evansville; brother, David and wife Nancy; three grandchildren, Kelly, Amanda and Ryan; three great-granddaughters, Makhala, Siarah and Taylor Lynn; and nieces and nephews.

Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2005, at Alexander East Chapel, officiated by Robert Coleman. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery.

Friends may call Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
