Ten Boys Make Indiana Basketball History

Playing on two consecutive State Championship basketball teams is a privilege reserved for only a small number of high school students, but seven Bosse boys, all of whom will leave this spring, have realized this ambition.

Bud Ritter, the "old-timer" on the team, has been on the varsity four years as center. Bud won the first Kiwanis basketball award presented at Bosse.

Next in line, as far as years on the varsity are concerned, is Broc Jerrel, who has earned

three varsity letters and has been playing basketball as long as he can remember.

Norris Caudell has played on the first five of the varsity two years, after being on both the freshman and second teams.

Jack Matthews was also on the starting five of the fresh-man and second teams before joining the varsity. Besieged with yellow jaundice, he lost out on several weeks of regular season play. Along with Bud, Broc and Norris, Jack has made all-state two years.

Norman McCool was a varsity reserve last year before becoming forward on the first five this season.

Gene Whitehead, reserve guard, proved his ability on the basketball court while filling in during Jack's illness. Don Til-ley, also a reserve guard, for two years, would be back next year under ordinary conditions.

Bill Butterfield, Al Buck and Jim DeGroote, all juniors who served as reserve players, will be pulling for Bosse again next season.

On November 24, 1944, the Bosse Bulldog basketball team ventured into a season that made them go down in history as one of the greatest teams in Indiana basketball, and they will never be forgotten among ardent Indiana fans and Bull-dog followers.

The Bulldogs accomplished everything in the books. They had a very successful season winning twenty-five out of twenty-seven games, winning the city championship, the SIAC championship and then decided that wasn't enough so they won their second consecutive state championship, an honor which comes to very few athletes and which only five previous schools have attained.

The starting five, Norris Caudell and Norm McCool, for-wards; Julius "Bud" Ritter, center; Bryan "Broc" Jerrel and Jack Matthews, guards; and two very capable substitutes, Gene Whitehead and Don Tilley, are the seniors on this great team. Only three boys from this team, Jim DeGroote, Bill Butterfield, and Alfred Buck will carry on the tradition for the scarlet and gray cagers. Coach Herman Keller capably assisted by Assistant Coach Arvel Kilpatrick had his boys so well trained that all of the starting five were named on an all-state team.

The team attributes its success not only to its ability and the splendid coaching, but to the many loyal supporting fans who backed them all the way.
