Charles Preston Mayton

Charles Preston Mayton joined his parents, Oscar and Georgia in Heaven on Friday, Feb. 16, 2007.

Charlie was their only son and was born Feb. 25, 1932.

Charlie grew up around Haynie's Corner, attended Culver Grade School and was a 1950 graduate of Bosse High School. He was active in sports and particularly enjoyed football as a fullback, No. 50.

After a period of employment with Mesker Steel, from where his father retired, Charlie was accepted as a lineman with "Ma" Bell. He worked his way through the ranks until he became a telephone installer. "Telephone Man" was how many people referred to Charlie and he was very proud to be a part of "Ma" Bell's family. Hard work and long hours filled Charlie's day until he retired in December 1986.

Charlie was married to Lettie Goodman for 31 years and they had two sons, Terrell Allen and Christopher Curtis. Charlie has two grandchildren, Terrell Alexander and Caitlin Susan.

Charlie married Nancy Shafer Feb. 23, 1985. They worked as partners installing business telephone systems by contracting jobs throughout the state for more than 10 years.

Charlie will be missed by his stepchildren, Christine and Andrew, and his loving sisters, Evelyn Woolley, Julia Forney and Carol Siegel.

Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2007, at Alexander Memorial Park Chapel, officiated by Father Jack Durchholz, with burial at Alexander Memorial Park. Friends may visit Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Alexander East Chapel.
