Fred G. Chumley, 73, of Evansville, passed away Monday, October 4, 2010, at his residence. He was born December 23, 1936, in Montgomery, Alabama.
To know Fred Chumley, was to know a man that loved his family, loved to eat, and loved the car and boat races. Fred was a proud alumnus of Culver School and Bosse High School, Class of '55, meeting monthly with classmates to visit and catch up. Some of his fondest memories are those of his beloved classmates that together have celebrated marriages, kids, grandkids, retirement, and many other milestones of life together.
On any given Sunday night in the summer, you could catch Fred at Tri-State Speedway. Together with his son Gary, and his grandkids, Jennifer, Amy, and Little Gary, the Chumleys would sit in the same seats year after year to cheer on their favorite race car drivers. Everyone would chuckle when on the way home grandpa would get a speeding ticket for forgetting that he wasn't in a race car himself.
Fred was a member of Southwestern Indiana Master Gardener's Association, the Oak Hill Conservation Club, and the Ohio Valley Common Ground Environmental Health Organization. He was a charter member of the National Hot Rod Association and a USI Alumni.
Fred lived a full and rich life. He enjoyed fixing up cars, upholstering furniture, gardening, attending the car races, and of course spending time with friends and family. His family takes comfort in knowing that he is now with the Lord, where he joined other family members and continues to watch over us and no longer has to suffer.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Lydia Sue Chumley; parents, Edward and Edna Chumley; and sister, Connie Clark.
He is survived by his wife, Peggie Sue; daughter, Shelly Robyne Chumley of Texas; son, Gary Ray Chumley; son, Edward "Stan" Chumley; daughter, Tamara Jo Chumley; and daughter, Gina Marie Chumley, all of Evansville; grandchildren, Caleb, Kristy, Melissa, Jennifer, Amy, Gary, Jr., John, Jeff, Alicia, Teresa, Dusty, Amanda, Trisha, Jamie, Anthony, and Michael; 20 great-grandchildren; brother, Gerald Chumley; sister, Gail Ingram; brother, Jim Chumley; brother, Curtis Chumley.
Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, October 7, 2010, at Alexander East Chapel, officiated by Rev. Jack Feldbusch with burial at Alexander Memorial Park. Friends may visit Wednesday from 3 to 8 p.m. and Thursday from 10 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.

Fred was one of our longest serving Master Gardener volunteers, taking the class in 1992. He was instrumental in setting up the Demonstration Butterfly Garden at the Wesselman Woods Nature Preserve, and took great pride in this spot of color.
He was dedicated, there was no denying that! I recall a few years ago, our January Master Gardener meeting was being cancelled due to a blizzard coming through. Hardly anyone braved the snow and ice to get to the 4-H Center, and I sent them home as soon as they got to the meeting. Just as I was shutting down the meeting hall, who should drive up but Fred, all ready and eager to share his knowledge and experience! To this day, I truly believe he felt I was "soft" for cancelling the meeting.... Fred, you will be missed.

Amy and Family, Please accept our sincere sympathy. No words can touch what you're feeling. No person can soften the loss. Still we are thinking about you and hoping it helps in some way to know that we share in your sadness.

Fred was my Grandpa & I am going to miss him, along with so many other people. It's sad how we don't realize how special someone is until they have passed. He had been involved in so many more things than we were able to list. He attended USI in the late 90's when I did and he was so tickled that we were going at the same time. I am so proud of him for that accomplishment.
His house was always open for our large family. If anyone was having a hard time,(divorce/finances) he let them stay with him for however long they needed. We had most of our holiday parties at his home, with him being the great host. There are too many great qualities to list for Grandpa. He will truly be missed.

Thank you everyone for all the kindness you have shown. Grandpa never forgot to tell me (or any of the ohter grandkids) how proud he was, and that encouragement helped me through a lot. We love you and will miss you Grandpa. Thanks for all the great memories.

Suzi and I want to extend our deepest sympathy to Fred's family, particularly to Gerald and Barb. We always enjoyed getting together at the Bosse reunions and having a separate Culver graduate visit.
