Augusta O. "Gussie" (Flowers) Clark

Augusta O. "Gussie" (Flowers) Clark, 60, daughter of the late Virginia Triggs Flowers Smith, made her transition into eternity Friday, March 17, 2006, while convalescing at the Charlier Hospice Center.

Gussie was born in Evansville, August 14, 1945. She attended Chestnut-Walnut and Lincoln Elementary Schools, Lincoln High School, and graduated from Bosse High School in 1963, the first desegregated class in Vanderburgh County. Upon completing high school Gussie continued her education at Lockyear Business College. She loved being able to help others and spent years working with kids, teens and the elderly. She was teachers' aide for Carver's Day Care Center, house parent for abused and troubled teens for the Villages of Indiana, residential coordinator for pregnant teens and their babies upon birth for Life Choice. She provided in-home health care for the elderly with Hoosier Health Care and Around the Clock Health Care. Her hobbies included working intricate jigsaw puzzles, crocheting, and counter-crossing stitching.

Gussie loved listening to and singing gospel music. She sang with groups such as "The Inspirations of Faith," "Unity," the Evansville Community Choir, the Evansville Chapter of the Gospel Music Workshop of America Inc., and New Hope Baptist Church Choir, the Voices of Hope. Her 50-plus years membership of New Hope Baptist Church is a good indication of her steadfast relationship with Jesus, whom she confessed and believed in from her youth. She sang in the church choir from her pre-teens until she was diagnosed with lung cancer in April 2004.

In addition to the choir, Gussie served in the Sunday School, Children's Church, and evangelistic visitation and bus ministries at New Hope. She was an exceptional fundraiser for the church's women's days, choir annual days, and pastoral anniversaries. She received special recognition as Woman of the Year during a women's day celebration for her outstanding service with the bus ministry.

As a mother, sister, aunt, cousin, Godmother, friend and a member of the Body of Christ, Gussie leaves to lovingly remember her, one son, Curtis Clark II; three grandchildren, Tiana Dayne Clark, Karsen Jones, and Addison Banay Clark; sisters, LaVerne Hinton and Barbara Warfield; brothers, George Flowers (Alma Dean) and Anthony Flowers; lots of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends which Wanda Smith was both friend and caregiver. She also leaves a Goddaughter, Windy Chinn, and grand Godchildren Haven Carter, Jaylin Chinn, and Carly Robins Jr. Finally, she will be remembered in the hearts and history of her pastors and church family.

Services celebrating Augusta's life will be Saturday, March 25, 2006, at New Hope Baptist Church, 633 S. Elliott St. Evansville, Indiana beginning 10 to 11:30 a.m. visitation hour. A musical tribute and the homegoing celebration will commence at 11:30 a.m. Pastor Rabon L. Turner officiating; final arrangements are provided by Mason Brothers Memorial Chapel.
