Phyliss Andrea (Smith) Johnson age 64, went home to be with her Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ on Friday, May 27, 2011.
She was born on October 17, 1946.
She was preceded in death by her father, Ardell Smith, Sr. Her mother Estella Married Charles Moss, SAr. (deceased), and of this union she was raised from a very young age. She was educated at Howard Roosa Elementary School and Benjamin Bosse High School [1965] in Evansville In.
Phyliss accepted Christ as her Saviour as a small child at Liberty Missionary Bapist Church under the Pastorate of Dr. Charles H. King Jr. She later joined Memorial Baptist Church where she grew with the spiritual guidance of her "loving Pastor and friend", Rev. Adrian Brooks. Phyliss was first employed at the Evansville State Hospital. From there she worked for several other organizations including the Pigeon Township Assessors Office. Turtle Creek Nursing Home, Kraft General Foods, and Emge Meats. She was ultimately hired in the job she most adored serving as Propety Manager at Liberty Terrace Apartments. Here she shared a reciprocated love with tenants for 17 and a half years. She took pride in the appearance of the property and was most excited when it received an award from Operation City Beautiful for its outstanding landscaping and exterior appearance designed and crafted by her own hands. In 1979 she was united in holy matrimony to Charles Richard Johnson, whom she dearly loved. She was a faithful member of the Memorial Baptist Church where she served in many ministries. She sang with Voices of Praise. Her passion and call was working with the youth. She co-Directed the D4J (Dances 4 Jesus) praise dancers. She taught Vacation Bible School and would spend her vacation time chaperoning at out-of-state youth conferences. She was rarely seen without her shadow, great-granddaughter Ni'Ya March. Phyliss was very artistic and known for creativity, Whether fine cuisine or home cooked soul food, her cooking was second to none. She was a perfected seamstress. Not only sewing much of her wardrobe, but she adorned many weddings and proms. She used her sewing talent in service to the church. She made usher board uniforms for Nazarene Baptist Church, children choir robes for Liberty Baptist Church, and baptismal gowning and the dance attire for D4J at Memorial. Phyliss thoughts and opinions were rarely a secret, you always knew where she was coming from, as her thoughts and opinions usually made it to her lips. However, friends never had time to dwell on her candid openness as it would often end with, "By the way. I made you your favorite dish or baked your favorite cake!"
She leaves to cherish many friends fond memories, her husband of 32 years Charles R. Johson; a son Michael Howard; two daughters Tamera Moredock and husband Charles, Desiree Johnson; step daughter Su'Wuan Johnson-Williams of Memphis TN, grand-daughter Lakeecha March; mother Estella Moss brothers Ardell Smith Jr. and wife Patti, and Charles Moss, Jr. sisters Sheila Spencer, Deborah Monroe of Fairfield, Ca and Angie Small; half-brother Anthony Smith and David Harris ; half-sisters, Kimberly Payne of St. Louis, Mo. Sonya Freeman and Gayle Broome both of Indianapolis, Lynne Farmer and Lee Ann Smith; sister-in-law, Delores Freeman and husband Wallace. Additionally she leaves behind six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, and many friends.
Funeral services 11:00 a.m. Thursday at Memorial Baptist Church. Visitation 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Memorial Baptist Church Burial in Oakhill Cemetery Rev. Adrian Brooks officiating Mason Brother Memorial Chapel handling arrangements 1001 Lincoln Ave.

To the family and friends of Ms. Phyliss: Since the moment that I walked in the doors of Liberty some 10 or 12 years ago Ms. Phyliss won my heart. I loved her and we shared emails and laughs. Her pressence was still down the halls of Liberty. Know she was loved and will not be forgotten. Another saint who served well. I speak blessings over this family and peace over you all.

Phyliss was such a wonderful Christian woman and friend. When I went through some personal difficulties, she was there with a word of scripture and her own uplifting, confident words of encouragement and shared faith. I know that God placed her there at that time for me. I celebrate her victory at "running the race," knowing full well that she has received the promise of everlasting life through Jesus Christ. May God reward you richly for your Christian service, Phyliss. My condolences to Lakeecha and family for your loss.

To Llynn and Smith Family. With heartfelt Sympathy What a loss we fell with losing Phyliss. I only knew her a short time on a personal level but just talking to her you would realize she was a child of God. God make us all different people but with the compassionate and caring spirit she had for everyone make her a unique gift she had from God. The love and care she gave to each of the tentants and their family at Liberty Terrace will not be forgotten, she treated them as her family. She loved her family so much and would always speak kindly about them and the work she did at her church. Yes she will be miss and there will be tears but that okay. But cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you. Phyliss is now resting in his arms it was her appointed time to go home. We know that God do not make mistakes. So trust him to give you strenth doing this time. My prayer for the family is that God comfort you today and tomorrow and he comfort you during this difficult time. Remember God heals the brokenhearted.

To The Family of Phyllis Smith Johnson, "Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints". Psalm 116:15 In these sad moments; we are left feeling lost and devastated. There are many questions; but the biggest one is "Why"? God knows what He is doing; He makes no mistakes; especially of this magnitude. His ways are not our ways and His thoughts are not out thoughts; His ways are perfect and He works all things together for good. Our times are in His Hands. He travels an appointed way. He does all things well. `We cannot be torn from this earth one hour ahead of the time God has appointed and we cannot be detained on earth one moment after God is done with us here on earth. God does all things well. To live is Christ but to die is gain. Phyllis has been promoted; relocated to a better place; instant transport to the celestial city; an early furlough from the battle zone; a release from the burdens of earth; to be with Christ for to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. He is a God of the living not of the dead. God does all things well. While we don't understand all of God's purposes, we must simply leave it there; for the one thing we do know is God does all things well.
In His Love, Min. Cheryl Ricketts, KCMO

Phyllis, I will truly miss hearing you sing on Sunday mornings, and working with you within the youth department at Memorial. We were only talking and laughing at youth night Thursday, and Friday you were called home. I pray every day for your family and especially Ni'Ya, I know that she is going to be lost without you here on earth. I hope that she continues to carry the love for the lord that you have shown her, and continues on with her dance in Gods love. I know that you are watching over her. I loved your honest and true spirit, you always took the extra second to say hello, how are you. I know that your death has given me a reminder that tomorrow my not come, so we need to live each day like it is our last. You planted so many seeds in our children and nurtured them thru song, dance, and teaching the word you will live on for many years in the hearts and minds of the youth and your family. I am a better person for knowing you, thank you for blessing me.

you've always been apart of my life....whether i was at home, away in the service & even in life apart from the service....u were always there for me...my best friend, my sister we often wondered why u were so hard on us as kids but grandma we thank you...now the seeds you've sown in us will always be with us now even though physically you are not here. you'll look down us from heaven & see that all you taught us was not lost & that you live on not only in our hearts, but also through our words to each other & our works with one another. i remember u telling me, when my granny was called home, "dont worry keturah, i'm grandma now, no i'm not her and maybe we won't do the same things but i'm grandma now". sometimes i never realized just how lucky truly was. i love you & i'll miss your warm smile & your big hugs but its not "goodbye" instead grandma "i'll see you later" hold me a spot on the praise team & in the choir...your legacy & life lessons live on through all the lives you've touched and helped along the way. i'll be like job and wait on the lord & for the day we meet again....i love you & you will be missed

To the Family: As Tammy said, "God Is Love". And Phyliss expressed this in everything she did; especially to me when she sang. From working with Dr. Charles Fold, when she would sing and bake him a cake -every year- up to singing in the Community Choir under the direction of Dr. Kandace Hinton. She now sings in "Heaven's Choir". May God's Love and Peace cover you all during this transition in time. Our Thoughts and Prayers are with you.

My deepest sympathy goes out to Phyliss's family. I feel fortunate to have known Phyliss for many years. Through working with Phyliss at General Foods, we shared many laughs, hard work, receipes, and her great pride in her church and family. She has been taken from us way too soon. Her honesty and courage under any situation is a trait I always greatly admired. Though she will be terribly missed, our heavenly father now has our angel at his side. Rest in Peace dear friend.

To the family of Phyllis Johnson, I was truly sadded by the news. Phyllis and I became good friends, with Keecha and Brandon, while singing in Memorial's choir, traveling with the youth to Gang Convention in Atlanta, she also made an outfit for me for Anointed Revelation. I know she is singing in the Heavenly as Roger is playing one of our favorite songs:Lord, Lord, Lord, you've been good to me, when I look where you have brought me you sure been good to me. Let me hear you say I am Blest, Phyllis would say Thank you Thank you Thank you Jesus. I just thank the Lord for letting me share time with such a beautiful, spirit filled christian. You will be truly missed but God loved you best and saw the Best in you. Save a seat for me.
