He was born November 16, 1908, in

, to Rufus E. and Bertha (
Metz
) McClary. He was married to Clara Werner McClary for 70 years. She predeceased him January 24, 2002.
Mr. McClary graduated from
Tennyson
High School
and
DePauw
University
, where he was a Rector Scholar. He received his Master's Degree from
Indiana
University
. He also attended National Science Foundation Institutes at
St. Louis University
,
Arizona
State University and
Yale
University
.
He taught chemistry and math at
Chester
High School
in
North Manchester
,
Indiana
, and
Tell
City
High School
for 10 years where he coached basketball and won a sectional title in 1932. He had a 34-year teaching career at
Bosse
High School
, in
Evansville
, where he was Director of Athletics for approximately 30 years. In 1967, he received the James B. Conant Award presented by the American Chemical Society for outstanding chemistry teachers. He served as head of the science department at Bosse for several years until his retirement in 1974. After his retirement, his time was spent investing, developing a 300-acre farm in
Warrick
County
, and trying to influence political thinking with letters to the editors, etc. He was residing in a retirement apartment in
Bloomington
,
Indiana
, at the time of his death.
Mr. McClary was a member of Delta Upsilon Fraternity at
DePauw
University
, Phi Delta Kappa, American Chemical Society, Indiana Alumni Association, and past president of the Evansville Science Teachers Association.
Mr. McClary is survived by two sons and their wives, Dr. Charles W. and Julia McClary of Bloomington, and Robert E. and Patricia McClary of Indianapolis; six grandchildren and their spouses, Charles A. and Linda McClary of Bloomington; Erin M. and Jay Curts of Carmel, Ind.; Colin J. and Amy McClary of Elmhurst, Ill.; John R. and Brittany McClary of Carmel; Andrew L. and Claudia McClary of Boca Raton, Fla..; Kevin R. and Kelly McClary of Alpharetta, Ga.; and eight great-grandchildren, Sam and Henry Curts, Charles, Scott, Addison, Andrew, Nicholas, and Ryan McClary.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Clara Werner McClary, and a brother, Harold M. McClary.
Services 11 a.m. Saturday Feb. 28, 2004, in
Alexander
