Helen K. Stoutenborough


Helen K. Stoutenborough, 88, of Evansville, died Tuesday, August 10, 2004. She retired in 1980 from the Evansville- Vanderburgh School Corporation, having been Senior Counselor at Harrison High School since it opened in 1962.

She began her career as a teacher of English at Pekin High School in Pekin, Illinois. In 1941, she moved to Evansville, where she taught English at Bosse High School. In 1956, she was appointed Dean of Girls at Bosse.

She received a bachelor's degree and a master's degree from the University of Illinois. She also attended the University of Colorado, where she took graduate courses in guidance during three summer sessions.

During World War II, she served as an officer in the WAVES. After completing her training at the Midshipman's Training School in Northampton, Massachusetts, she received orders to that school. She remained in Northampton until the school closed. Her next orders were to report to the Port Director's Office in San Francisco, California. She remained there until the end of the war. After being released from Active Duty, she returned to her teaching position at Bosse.

She was an active member of First Presbyterian Church, having served as deacon, elder and trustee.

She was a member of the National Education Association, the Indiana Retired Teachers Association, Evansville Retired Teachers Association, Pi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, Pi Lambda Theta, American Association of University Women, Vanderburgh Chapter of DAR, Chapter BB of PEO Sisterhood and Alpha Chi Omega Sorority.

Survivors are a nephew, Thomas P. Crabtree of Rio Rancho, New Mexico; 2 nieces, Carol Ann Crabtree of Tampa, Florida, and Barbara J. Atkins of Chuluota, Florida; 3 great-nieces and 2 great nephews; 1 great-great-niece and 5 great-great-nephews.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, August 13, 2004, at the Alexander East Chapel, the Reverend Kevin Fleming and the Reverend Wendy McCormick officiating. Graveside services will be held in Maroa, Illinois, with burial in the Maroa Cemetery.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, August 12, 2004, at Alexander East Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church in Evansville or to a favorite charity.
