Leo Bernard Waninger


Leo Bernard Waninger, 63, of Evansville, passed away on Sunday, Oct. 15, 2006, at his home.

Leo graduated from the University of Evansville and received his master's degree in business education from Indiana University. He started his 35-year teaching career at North High School and later at Bosse High School, where he served as department chair in business technology, until his retirement in 1999. He then worked for the Catholic Diocese of Evansville in charge of their database for The Message. Leo was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in the county. He was an active member of the Cursillio Movement and recently was on the last October weekend retreat team of Cursillio No. 66. Leo was a member and served on the board of the Evansville Cotary Dance Club. He was a member of the Friday Night Dance Club and helped organize the St. Joseph Dance Group.

Leo is survived by his wife of 36 years, Roberta Waninger of Evansville; a son, Eric John Waninger and his wife, Jill of Indianapolis; a daughter, Amy Lynn Waninger of San Diego, Calif.; and brothers, Donald, Maurice and Alfred Waninger, all of Chrisney, Ind., and William Waninger of Eden, Md. Also surviving are nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.

Leo is preceded in death by his parents, Laura (Staub) and Raymond Waninger; six sisters, Marie and Margaret Waninger, Mary Detar, Delores Gramelsbacher, Catherine Capshaw and Frances Banks; and four brothers, Ralph, Martin, Charles and Robert Waninger.

Services are 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 19, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in the county, with Father Eugene Schroeder officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery in the county. Visitation will be on Wednesday, Oct. 18, from 2 to 8 p.m., with a memorial at 7 p.m., at Ziemer Funeral Home North Chapel, 6300 First Ave., and continued on Thursday, Oct. 19, from 10 a.m. until service time at the church.
