Orvil L. Hilgedieck, 88, passed away Saturday, Feb. 24, 2007, at A lifelong resident of He volunteered to join the Army prior to the outbreak of World War II and was assigned to the Army Air Corps as a plane spotter on the Returning to civilian life in 1945, he married Irma Schwartz. This 48-year union produced the lights of his life, his daughters, Karen, Connie, and Lois. An active member of Olivet Presbyterian and Bethlehem United Church of Christ, he lived his faith through thoughts and deeds for family and friends. He volunteered for church work crews, did woodworking projects for his daughters, and coached youth and church baseball teams. Area residents will remember Orvil as a salesman for Heldt & Monroe, Sears & Roebuck, and Tri-State Motorcycle. Orvil was preceded in death by his wife, Irma; parents, Walter and Vella; brothers, Wilbur, Roy, and Arthur; an infant grandson; and niece, Marsha Gauntt. He is survived by his daughters, Karen Holdaway of Evansville, Connie Charlton and husband, Larry of Newburgh, and Lois Smith and husband, Randall of Evansville; grandchildren, Amy Boyer and husband, John, Beth Charlton and companion, Rick Overfield, and Daniel and Bradley Smith; great-grandchildren, Justin Overfield and Samuel and Emma Boyer; sister, Vera Gauntt of Knoxville, Tenn.; nieces, The family expresses their sincere gratitude to Columbia Healthcare and Southern Care for giving Orvil a final year of comfort and dignity.
