Samuel R. Steele


Samuel R. Steele, 55, of Evansville, died Monday, January 29, 2007, at Deaconess Hospital.

Sam had a lifelong love of the Ohio River. He spent much time as a youth on the river. His family owned the Billy Koch Boat Club when he was young. For the last 30 years, he was Harbor Master at Inland Marina. Sam was a member of the International Propeller Club-Port of Evansville-Owensboro and Inland Yacht Club.

He was a [1970?] graduate of Bosse High School. He served in the U.S. Army and was a member of VFW Post No. 1114.

He was preceded in death by his father, Paul W. Steele, M.D.

Sam is survived by his wife, Paula (Helmerich) Steele of Evansville; mother, Mary Jane Steele of Evansville; sister, Nancy Prusz and husband, Edward of Newburgh; and their children, Andy and Joe Prusz; sister, Anne Steele of San Francisco, Calif., and her children Jennifer and Cynthia Clare and Morgen Warner; also nieces and nephews, John and Andrew Helmerich, and Claire and Reed Stover; and stepson, Dennis Nettles.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, February 3, 2007, at Alexander East Chapel, conducted by Wharfmaster Jack Cunningham. Friends may visit from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday at Alexander East Chapel.
